Used to and Would

Used to + V is used to describe repeated actions in the past which no longer happen. It sometimes denotes actions characterizing a person or actions or states which lasted a long time. The interrogative form is did… use to?, the negative form is didn’t use to / used not to.

Kim used to go and play in the Hoo’s garden.

There used to be a school here.

Did you use to read a lot when you were a child?

She didn’t use to drink much coffee until she started working night shift.

Would is also used to describe things that often happened in the past. It is very close to used to, but it is more formal and needs to be associated with a time indicator. Besides, it cannot be used with stative verbs, such as know, be or want.

When fits of melancholy came upon him, he would spend all days locked in his room.

EXERCISES

1.     Put a tick beside the sentences in which would could replace used to. Make the sentences negative and interrogative. Pay attention to the word order.

1.     The father used to farm and hunt and the mother used to look after the home.

2.     Every morning I always used to get up at dawn and go for a walk.

4.     I used to be much slimmer when I was younger.

2.     Read an extract from the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and comment on the use of used to and would. Translate it into Russian.

When we were children, Hassan and I used to climb the poplar trees in the driveway of my father’s house and annoy our neighbors by reflecting sunlight into their homes with a shard of mirror. We would sit across from each other on a pair of high branches, our naked feet dangling, our trouser pockets filled with dried mulberries and walnuts. We took turns with the mirror as we ate mulberries, pelted each other with them, giggling, laughing; I can still see Hassan up on that tree, sunlight flickering through the leaves on his almost perfectly round face, a face like a Chinese doll chiseled from hardwood: his flat, broad nose and slanting, narrow eyes like bamboo leaves, eyes that looked, depending on the light, gold, green, even sapphire I can still see his tiny low-set ears and that pointed stub of a chin, a meaty appendage that looked like it was added as a mere afterthought. And the cleft lip, just left of midline, where the Chinese doll maker’s instrument may have slipped; or perhaps he had simply grown tired and careless.

Sometimes, up in those trees, I talked Hassan into firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor’s one-eyed German shepherd. Hassan never wanted to, but if I asked, _really_ asked, he wouldn’t deny me. Hassan never denied me anything. And he was deadly with his slingshot. Hassan’s father, Ali, used to catch us and get mad, or as mad as someone as gentle as Ali could ever get. He would wag his finger and wave us down from the tree. He would take the mirror and tell us what his mother had told him, that the devil shone mirrors too, shone them to distract Muslims during prayer. "And he laughs while he does it,” he always added, scowling at his son.

"Yes, Father,” Hassan would mumble, looking down at his feet. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor’s dog, was always my idea.

3.     Make up a short story using the words:

knife, servant, entrance, tease, …-shaped, ignorance, to make amends to smb for smth.

4.     Translate the sentences using the construction used to/would. Give two variants where possible.

1.     Раньше к северу от этого места находилось поместье князей (prince) Шереметьевых. В настоящее время сохранился великолепный замок, куда можно съездить на экскурсию, снять номер-люкс (luxary suite), побродить по замку в поисках привидений.

2.     В детстве, когда Глинка болел, ему в комнату приносили маленькие колокола, потому что он обожал колокольный звон( chime) и это помогало ему выздороветь.

3.     Раньше в школе его дразнили.  Бывало, он и сам любил обозвать кого-нибудь имбецилом или другим сложным словом, значение которого его одноклассники не всегда могли понять.

4.     В детстве няня рассказывала маленькому Пушкину сказки, пела народные песни. Эта поэзия русского слова, которой мы наслаждаемся в его стихах, привлекала его  с самого детства.

5.     Раньше у него была привычка кивать головой всегда, когда он был чем-либо доволен, огорчен или озадачен(perplexed).

6.     Не злись! И перестань хмуриться, морщинки будут. Что с тобой происходит? Ты раньше не выходил из себя по пустякам.

7.     Бывало, перелезем ночью через забор, рвем соседские яблоки, гранаты, груши. А ночью не видно, зрелые(ripe) они или нет – куснешь и морщишься – зеленое попалось.

8.     Раньше мы понятия не имели, что такое куклы, купленные в магазине. Мы делали кукол из травы, случалось, кто-то из мужчин вырезал деревянную куклу. Это было счастьем. Сейчас, как мне кажется, дети не испытывают такой радости  от новых игрушек.

9.     Еще несколько десятилетий назад такие врожденные дефекты, как заячья губа или волчья пасть (cleft palate) тяжело устранялись. Теперь же подобные операции делаются в любой более или менее крупной клинике, и детям не приходится всю жизнь страдать по поводу внешности.

10.       До 1911 года знаменитая Джоконда  (La Gioconda) Леонардо да Винчи (Leonardo da Vinci) была, пожалуй, известна в основном тонким ценителям искусства. Однако после детективной истории с похищением картины из Лувра она стала самым известным и дорогим произведением искусства.

12.       Вы в детстве в прятки играли? Нет? А мы играли. Бывало, соберемся утром и до позднего вечера. Я как-то так долго просидела под каким-то кустом, что уснула, и никто меня так и не нашел.

5.     Comment on the phrase I would always feel guilty about it later. So I’d try to make up for it by giving him one of my old shirts or a broken toy. I would tell myself that was amends enough for a harmless prank.
