    Read the text and answer the questions below. Pay close attention to the phrases in bold type.
    APHRODITE WAS NO LADY

    Fabled Golden Aphrodite! Also known as Kallipygos (Beautiful Buttocks). Born full-blown from the sea. Worshipped for centuries by amorous couples coupling glamor-ously. She was Homer’s Goddess of Pure and Heavenly Love, but we forget that Homer was blind. So, alas, are we. It turns out that Aphrodite was not Ms. Clean at all but the Goddess of Naughty Sex. It is she we can thank for most of mankind’s sexual problems, and chief among these is our obsession with her elusive elixir, the aphrodisiac. Nothing is safe from her depredations, not even endangered species. Government agents recently rounded up a band of poachers accused of slaughtering hundreds of black bears in the Northeastern U.S., ripping out their gallbladders and selling them for profit. The gallbladders are dried and ground into powder and sent to Asia, where they are sold for as much as $540 an oz. for “medicinal” purposes. Men who take a tiny pinch of the powder are convinced that it enhances their libido. They believe that if you devour parts of a powerful animal, you will absorb its sexual vitality. And if bear gallbladder fails, they will contrive po-tions and lotions from the hump of the camel, the penis of the tiger or the horn of the rhinoc-eros.

    So it was Aphrodite who led us on. For starters, according to one account, she was created from the genitals of the god Uranus, who had been hurled, dismembered, into the sea by his ill-tempered son Cronus. Her husband was Hephaestus, blacksmith to the gods and the ugliest fellow in the pantheon. This may explain why Aphrodite lost no time in fool-ing around with squads of other gods and not a few surprised mortals, among them an obscure shepherd or two. It is no wonder that Aphrodite should continue to be so seductive even to this day. Underachieving, oversexed men keep pounding at her door, and she is always at home.

    Exercises:

    1. The main idea of the text is that due to Aphrodite:

    1. Birth-rate has dramatically fallen down
    2. People began to think too much about their libido and sex
    3. Homer became blind
    4. Olympic gods had naughty sex

    2. What versions of translation will you choose in:

    Fabled — легендарная; воспетая поэтами; воспетая в легендах;

    Born… from the sea — рожденная морем; рожденная из моря; рожденная из морской пены;

    Worshipped for centuries — воспетая в веках; воспетая веками; обожествляемая веками;

    Aphrodite lost no time— Афродите не теряла времени и дурачилась; in fooling around Афродита, не долго думая, завязывала интрижки Афродита, не теряя времени, одурачивала

    Fling — close in meaning but also means бросаться (She flung myself in my arms — она бросилась в мои объятья; He flung himself into saddle – он вскочил в седло; also he flung her aside like an old glove — он выбросил ее, как ненужную перчатку;)
    Toss — “to throw lightly; подбрасывать to toss a coin – подбросить монету (для жеребьевки), to toss one’s head – встряхнуть головой.
    To contrive: 1) придумывать, изобретать; разрабатывать (He will surely contrive some-thing even in a seemingly losing battle — он наверняка придумает что-нибудь даже в казалось бы безнадежной борьбе.2) He contrived a computer from spare parts he found in the telecommunication centre. — Он ухитрился собрать компьютер из запасных частей в телекоммуникационном центре.
    To be obsessed - страдать от навязчивой идеи, помешаться на чем-л

    4. Translate into English, using a dictionary:

    ПРИМЕР ПЕРЕВОДА:

    АФРОДИТА БЫЛА СОВСЕМ НЕ ЛЕДИ.

    Легендарная Золотая Афродита! Известная также как Каллипигос ( Богиня с красивыми ягодицами). Рожденная из пены морской уже созревшей. Веками боготворимая влюбленными парочками, с упоением предающимися любви. Для Гомера она была Богиней Чистой и Божественной Любви. Но мы забываем, что Гомер был слеп. И мы, увы, тоже. Оказывается, Афродита была вовсе не Мисс Чистота, а Богиня Грязного Секса. Именно ее следует благодарить за большинство сексуальных проблем человечества, главная из которых – наша одержимость эфемерным эликсиром, афродизиаком.

    Ничто не укроется от ее разрушительного действия, даже вымирающие виды. Недавно правительственные агенты поймали банду браконьеров, обвиняемых в уничтожении сотен черных медведей на северо-востоке США. Браконьеры вырезали у медведей желчные пузыри и выгодно их продавали. Желчные пузыри сушат, измельчают в порошок и отправляют в Азию, где продают за $540 за унцию (28.35 г) на «медицинские» нужды. Мужчины убеждены в том, что даже крошечная щепотка этого порошка повышает либидо. Они верят: если проглотишь кусочек сильного животного, его сексуальная энергия перейдет тебе. А если не выйдет с медвежьим желчным пузырем, они изобретут целительные бальзамы и зелья из горба верблюда, пениса тигра или рога носорога.

    Итак, Афродита нас провела. Для начала, по одной из легенд, она была создана из гениталий бога Урана, которого злобный сын Крон лишил власти и низвергнул в море. Ее мужем был Гефест, кузнец у богов и самый уродливый парень в пантеоне. Возможно, это объясняет, почему Афродита не терялась и вовсю зажигала с компаниями других богов и несколькими обалдевшими смертными, среди которых один-два неизвестных пастушка. Неудивительно, почему Афродита по сей день так соблазнительна. Недалекие, помешанные на сексе мужчины все так же толпятся у ее двери, и она всегда дома.
