он может его не совершать.
В случае NEEDN'T HAVE DONE он этого не знал. Поэтому
действие БЫЛО совершено, хотя потом выяснилось, что совершать его не было
необходимости:
НАПРИМЕР:
I didn't sleep
the night, finishing my project. Later my professor told me that I had 3 more
days on finishing it. I NEEDN’T HAVE STAYED UP ALL NIGHT (мог бы и не сидеть всю ночь, но не знал
этого, и потому сидел).
НО:
— I stayed
up all night finishing my project. What about you?
— I didn’t
need to stay up because I had prepared my project long before that. (А
мне не нужно было сидеть, потому что я закончил свой проект задолго до этого).
